Classroom Transformation

How would it be if learning was a stress-free, joyful process for both children and teachers? That is what Asli Shiksha tries to achieve with its classroom transformation initiative. This initiative has the following two components:

Teacher/ Student Orientation:

a. The teachers go through the effortless learning workshop to experience and understand the philosophy of effortless learning. Time taken: 2.5 hours.

b. The students go through the five modules of the ‘Learning Can Be Fun’ workshop. This helps them experience and internalise the process of effortless learning. Time taken: 2 hours x 5 = 10 hours.

The objectives of the stress-free classroom are:

-No stress for students and teachers and

-The subjects transacted effectively and efficiently.

Implementation:

The broad steps to implement this are as follows:

  1. Only one chapter from one subject is worked on by the children in a class over the duration of a full working day.

  2. Children sit in small groups. 4-5 per group.

  3. The teacher gives a short introduction to the chapter. The objective of this short introduction is to get the children interested.

  4. The children read the chapter individually.

  5. Children discuss what they have read in their groups. What they don’t understand, they look up on the Internet, refer to Khanacademy, ask their teachers etc.

  6. They write the answers to chapter-end questions in their notebooks. With discussions among themselves if required.

  7. The groups create a mind-map of the chapter on a large sheet of paper. This is a summary of the entire chapter.

  8. The groups make a presentation of their mind-maps to the rest of the class.

  9. The summary of the chapter, now available at-a-glance can be put up on the class wall.

  10. The teachers are available for the students when they ask specific questions. Or they can go around and sit with the groups sometimes to help. But their job shifts from transacting textbook content to becoming inspirational story-tellers and mentors on their subjects.
